Armour Heights

Armour Heights sits on the north east corner of Bathurst Street and Wilson Avenue.

In the early 1800’s the land was owned by a farmer John Armour. He sold off the eastern part of the land to the Hogg Brothers, that land later became Hogg’s Hollow. The remaining land stayed with the Armour family until right before WW1. The property was then sold to developer Colonel Frederick Burton Robins, who envisioned building an upper class neighbourhood. His private residence, a large Tudor mansion, the Strathrobyn was built in 1914 but all other development was put on hold because of the war. During the war, he loaned the property to the military, and an air training facility was established. After the war the base became home to Bishop-Barker Aeroplanes Limited. The Air base closed in the 1920’s and reopened in 1942.

In the 1950’s, highway 401 was built. It runs through this neighbourhood. Since then farm land slowly converted into middle class housing and in the 1970’s there was a boom of large, modern homes being built.
The Strathrobyn still stands and is now the Canadian Forces College.

This part of Bathurst Street is home to the largest Jewish community in Toronto. Bathurst Street is Lined with a number of Jewish stores, restaurants, and synagogues.

The Armour Heights Community Centre, has recreation and classes for all ages and houses the local public library. Earl Bales Park sits on the north end of this neighbourhood, it is a large park with trails, community centre and home to the North York Ski Centre.
